MY WORK

Michael Rosen is a mainstay in British schools. One of the most beloved British poets alive, he held the prestigious title of Children’s Laureate from 2007 to 2009, has written over 140 books and shows no signs of slowing down. One of his most famous titles, We’re Going On a Bear Hunt, was the subject of a Guinness World Record attempt for “largest reading lesson” in 2014, and even influenced a rise in “bear hunts” in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people hid bears across their land for local children to find.

When you can't carry out the research you had planned, what do you do with the mice you've already got? The Covid-19 pandemic has thrown research off course in all manner of ways, but little hit so hard as the need to cull research mouse cultures. It's not been easy to handle, and the pandemic has reinforced both the importance of animals in scientific research and the attachment researchers have to their cultures...

When you identify as queer but enter into relationships with heterosexual people, or those with of a different gender to your own, it can feel odd to consolidate these two parts of your identity. You’re not straight, but society can perceive you that way – where do you fit in, exactly?...

When I was in my early teens, I began experiencing symptoms of depression and social anxiety. I was struggling to enjoy life and couldn't see how it would ever get better, to the detriment of my social life and what I perceived to be the 'normal' adolescent life. It took over five years to be prescribed medication, with the feeling that I was being fobbed off by the institutions that were supposed to help me...

As a student looking to break into journalism, you’ll get a lot of advice thrown your way. You’ll hear a lot about work experience, honing your CV or finding jobs. But we’d bet a pretty penny that you won’t hear enough about how to launch your freelance career. Yes, we mean launching it right now...

Graduating can be a daunting experience, but you can get ready for the transition during your final year at university...

Over a million tourists visit Copenhagen each year, but Denmark’s other cities can often get overlooked. Kolding, about an hour’s drive from the German border on the Jutland peninsula, is a less-discovered area of the country, but with its cornucopia of things to see, do and enjoy, it’s well worth a trip...

Southampton's hospitals have come under intense strain thanks to austerity. Will cuts to public services define the election result here?...

A little over 50 years ago, the British government decided to designate a “new town” in the rural county of Shropshire, taking in the smaller towns of Dawley, Oakengates, and Wellington. Thirty miles north west of Birmingham, it helped to deal with the increasing urban sprawl, and eased congestion, in the West Midlands. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn went to school in Newport – another one of these towns which forms the borough of Telford & Wrekin...

How IDLES fans have used social media to create something truly wonderful...

Mention Jacqueline Wilson to your average British twenty-something, and they will be able to talk at length about her books. The story of April, abandoned in a dustbin as a baby. Elsa, who lives in a bed-and-breakfast with her family or Dolphin and her eccentrically tattooed mum. One of the best known children’s writers in the UK, Wilson was the most-borrowed author from British libraries for four years in the mid-noughties, and has sold over 40 million books to date...
